Financing enhances programs for low-income and homeless families in Wisconsin
Madison, Wis. – August 11, 2008 – A $350,000 loan from Forward Community Investments to the Central Wisconsin Community Action Council (CWCAC) finances a new Beaver Dam facility that boosts housing and food security for low-income families and homeless people in central Wisconsin. The project responds to an increasing need from those living below the poverty line in Wisconsin. “We are excited to be part of a project that provides needed opportunities for low-income families and homeless people living in our state,” said Salli Martyniak, Forward Community Investments president. A larger facility will more accurately match the growth and breadth of the organization’s social service programs. The new facility also offers six affordable apartments for low-income families. “The financing allows us to make a greater impact on low-income and no-income families,” said Fred Hebert, CWCAC executive director. “By having our own building, we gain exposure for the services we offer and solidify our presence in the Beaver Dam community.” The facility in downtown Beaver Dam, expected to open in September, is an accessible location for people living in central Wisconsin. It increases space for the homeless prevention program, which serves almost 80 families each year. The project also combines several local food pantries that provide food security to nearly 6,000 individuals annually. The CWCAC will share building space with United Migrant Opportunity Services, which runs a voucher program for over 3,000 migrant people each year. The organizations will combine their food programs to increase ease of use for clients. “This project will work to sustain and strengthen communities across central Wisconsin,” said Martyniak. The Central Wisconsin Community Action Council provides housing, employment and homeless prevention and intervention services to people in Adams, Columbia, Juneau, Sauk, Dodge and Waushara Counties. In 2007, they served 302 households, including 496 adults and 360 children. About Forward Community Investments: –30– |
