Nonprofits must seize the moment during tough economic times

Madison, Wis. – Dec. 4, 2008 – Leaders from across sectors came together at the Goodman Community Center on December 3 for a celebration of innovative philanthropy in the face of economic crisis.

There is unparalleled opportunity for nonprofits to have enormous impact during these times, according to keynote speaker and noted philanthropist Chris Abele.

“An economic downturn gives people the opportunity to ask what really matters,” said Abele, president of the Argosy Foundation. “There is now a chance for people to make a big change.”

This message of hope energized the crowd at the 2008 Community Builder Award presented by Forward Community Investments, a statewide community development loan fund. This year, Home Savings Bank President Jim Bradley was recognized for his pioneering work in overcoming barriers to change by working across sectors.

Bradley noted that nonprofit life isn’t easy. He applauded the inspiring leadership of several nonprofit executive directors, inviting them to stand up and be recognized for their compelling vision for our state.

“There is an opportunity to make courageous moves in this environment,” said Salli Martyniak, Forward Community Investments president. “All sectors must become more proactive in helping strengthen nonprofits as they increasingly struggle to do more with less.”

Forward Community Investments helps make this vision a reality through a progressive system of lending that sends investor dollars through nonprofits directly into needy communities.

“Nonprofits can do such beautiful things,” said Martyniak. “No matter what happens, we’ll overcome our fears, find new ways to work together and continue the fight to better our communities.”
